College Reach Out Program

The College Reach Out Program (CROP) seeks to supplement the academic skills of rising 7th-12th grade students and provide early exposure to the university environment, while preparing students for more challenging courses and college admission. Participants engage in classes and/or preparation in the areas of mathematics, English, science, and writing, which are joined around a common theme and aligned with the objectives of the Sunshine State Standards.

CROP applicants must attend a targeted Miami-Dade County Public School. They must also meet at least one of the academic and one of the economic criteria in order to participate in the program.

Academic Criteria

  • Potential first generation college student (parents have not received a bachelor’s degree from an American institution)
  • GPA below 2.5
  • FCAT scores in math or reading are below average
  • 9th – 11th grade students who have no Level II or Level III math or science courses
  • Retained or enrolled in a dropout prevention program.

Economic Criteria

  • Low income as defined by the Florida Department of Education (click here for criteria)
  • Receives free or reduced lunch
  • Receives public assistance
  • Receives AFDC/TANF/WAGES
